Flashdance Fridays at Castle Batch

Castle Batch Primary, a new member of the Priory Learning Trust, has been spending Friday lunchtimes encouraging flashmob style dances in the playground.

The weekly event all began when Miss Adamson, a member of the support staff, decided to stick on some music during the children's break and allow them to dance around. This led to conversations with one of the teachers, Mrs Buckland, around developing the concept into a more formal event.
An Opportunity for Growth and Confidence as well as Fun
According to Miss Adamson, the students who would otherwise have struggled to find someone to play with at break are now able to get involved in this large group activity. Even for those who don't find making friends difficult, it has provided an excellent opportunity for them to make connections across year groups and develop a whole school sense of community.
"We find it really fun and exciting and just want everyone to have a good time." - Freya
Initially, the sessions were led by two students, Freya and Emma, but the team has now expanded and features younger students who are being trained to lead the dances once the founding members move on to secondary school. For, them, according to Miss Adamson, the initiative is proving useful at building their confidence and leadership skills.
The initiative is typical of Castle Batch's attitude towards the social welfare of its children and a sign of its commitment to finding new and exciting ways to enrich the students' school experience. It's an ethos that shows no sign of slowing down since the school joined the Priory Learning Trust in April - on the final day of the SATs, the students were visited by Neville Coles, head of the trust, who supervised the distribution of ice creams to reward the kids for all their hard work.
